The UPSC SO/Steno (Grade 'B'/Grade-I) Limited Departmental Competitive Exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the recruitment of Section Officers (SO) and Stenographers (Grade 'B'/Grade-I) in various government ministries and departments.

Key Points:

1. Eligibility:

   • SO (Section Officer): Open to Assistants of the Central Secretariat Service, Railway Board Secretariat Service, and others who meet specific criteria like a certain length of service.

   • Steno (Grade 'B'): Open to officers of the Central Secretariat Stenographers Service (CSSS) with a specific length of service.

2. Exam Pattern:

   • Paper-I: Objective type, testing General Awareness and English language.

   • Paper-II: Subjective type, testing knowledge of relevant rules, regulations, and procedures specific to the services.

   • Paper-III: Essay-type paper testing essay writing skills in English or Hindi.

   • Shorthand Test (for Stenographers): This tests the candidate’s shorthand transcription skills, typically in English or Hindi.

3. Syllabus:

   • General Awareness: Current events, history, geography, economic and social development, environmental issues, etc.

   • English: Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and precis writing.

   • Service Rules: Detailed knowledge of rules and regulations relevant to the department in which the candidate is working.

4. Application Process:

   • Candidates need to apply through their respective departments, and only eligible candidates are forwarded to UPSC for consideration.
